Whilst we’re all getting excited about tonight’s episode of
The Great British Sewing Bee, wondering who will make it through to the finals
(can’t believe it’s almost over already!) would you like the chance to win the
dressmaking scissors used in the show?
Those distinctive orange
handled scissors are in fact Fiskars
dressmaking scissors (RRP. £21.99) and Fiskars are kindly giving us 2 pairs to
giveaway this evening.
To enter either comment below or tweet us @sewingdirectory
to tell us when you first came across Fiskars scissors?
I first discovered them as a child when asking my mum why
her scissors had such colourful handles.
Being a left-handed dressmaker she struggled to find good quality left
handed shears so has used Fiskars for her whole career.
Do share your story below, or on Twitter and we’ll pick a couple
of winners at random after tonight’s show.
Terms &
conditions - UK & Ireland only – Ends midnight Tuesday 16th
April. Winners will be announced on this
blog on the 17th April. If commenting below please ensure I have a way of contacting
you if you win.
Whilst we’re talking about Fiskars I have to say I recently
bought a pair of their new Servo
Cut scissors (shockingly white handled instead of orange!) and they are
brilliant, they cut through fabric as if it was paper, even managed 4 layers of fabric plus 2 layers of wadding a couple days ago with no problem. Guess this is one family
tradition that will be continuing! ;-)

ReplyDeleteI first came across Fiskars scissors as a child when my Dad who was a pattern cutter used to take me to his studio :)

I first came across Fiskars when I was given a pair for Christmas to help me make a dress for a friend's 18th birthday party. I still use them over 25 years on :o)
ReplyDeleteonly when i came back to sewing a couple of years ago, they are part of sewing. i'm sure other peoples mums had them when i was little as i have never been 'shocked' by the handle colour (that or going up in the 70's made me used to oranges and browns!)
ReplyDeleteI first came across them at school when everyone else in my needlework class had scissors with bright orange handles, but I had a plain pair as my Yorkshire-born Dad insisted I had scissors which were made in Sheffield.
ReplyDeleteI've only been sewing a short time, but noticed them in the shop (because of the orange handles) and bought them. Got quite a few pairs and wouldn't have any other sort now !!
ReplyDeleteI first saw a pair of fiskars scissors while I was working as an au pair in Finland. The mother in the family was so proud they were finnish and they had just about every kind of scissor fiskars made. I don't use any other type ever since!
ReplyDeleteI first used these at university when making theatrical costumes - perfect for a leftie like me!

I first came across them in textiles at secondary school, i loved that class and got hooked on sewing and bought my own pair!x
ReplyDeleteI am using a pair of Wilkinson Sword shears at the moment. The lady in my local fabric shop uses Fiskars and she was saying how much she rates them. My Wilkinsons are about 20 years old now, she said her Fiskars were older than that and she had only needed them sharpened once!
ReplyDeleteI had my first taste of those orange handles doing O level textiles in the 70's!! I'm still using mine!

ReplyDeleteI first used Fiskars in school - there were none left in textiles, so I was allowed (trusted) to use the teacher's.
ReplyDeleteI never used them again until I did a dressmaking course, and would love my own pair - if only I could afford them! :-( I need to start making money from my sewing, and not just making for myself/gifts!
When I was just a girl nan had some she is 93 now bless she used to makd me pretty nightdresses when I stayed over she has dementia now. I hope one day I can make things like she did practice makes purfect
ReplyDeleteI came across Fiskars when I bought my first pair of left handed scissors about 15 years ago, I don't think mine are dressmaking scissors but that's what I use them for.

I dream of owning a pair of Fiskars of my own as I always borrow my Nan's! What a brilliant prize!

ReplyDeleteSome years ago my now ex-husband used my Singer dressmaking shears for cutting carpet. After being in the dog house good and proper, he went out one day and bought me a pair of Fiskars, purchasing then as the lady in the shop told him they would get him plenty of 'Brownie points' back home. I've used Fiskars ever since, they are excellent quality and last better than then husbands!!
ReplyDeleteThink my Mum's always had a pair of these - we were told never to use them or else!
ReplyDeleteInspired by The Sewing Bee I am currently making my first blouse, I could have done with these when I was cutting out, I would love to own a set for all my future makes :)
ReplyDeleteI was recommended Fiskars when I wanted to do some decorative cutting on cards. They have a great range. Looking forward to Sewing Bee this eve.
ReplyDeleteFiskars are simply the King of scissors. Absolutely everyone sewer should have a pair if not two (one large and one small pair)
ReplyDeleteat hancocks when i first started quilting
ReplyDeleteI discovered them in exactly the same way!! My mum always used them!
ReplyDeleteI fist used Fiskars Scissors at a school I worked in about 15 years ago - they were so lovely to use. I'd love a pair as my current dressmaking scissors have had it!
ReplyDeleteMy mum was given two pairs of Fiskars' scissors as part of a Christmas present one year as we were forever 'borrowing' them and they were never to be found! Mum hoped that having two pairs and the bright bold orange handles would make them easier to find, but alas, everyone wants to use them! I first grasped a pair of Fiskars' scissors when 'borrowing' my mum's to cut paper for a school project. Since then, I have managed to accquire a couple pairs of my own, including the needlework scissors which are my current favourite, and look forward to adding more to my collection!
ReplyDeleteI came across them when I worked in a local craft shop several years ago. The owner swore by them and her rotary cutter came firmly second!
ReplyDeleteI was at a sewing class where the teacher used them, would love a pair of my own though
ReplyDeleteI first came across Fiskars when my husband bought me a pair of their dressmaking shears about 20 years ago. They are still like new!
ReplyDeleteMy mum had a pair (still has!) I've always wanted a pair! I've bought many Fiskars items before but never the fabric scissors. (staceycatlin@hotmail.com)
ReplyDeleteMy mum had as pair. I used to and my eldest cut through several layers of denim at once with them a few years ago. They were never the same after that!
ReplyDeleteFiskars were my first ever dressmaking scissors about 30 years ago until 'somebody' used them for a DIY project and broke them. Would love to have them replaced.
ReplyDeleteFirst came across Fiskars last year when travelling on a ferry. The ferry company were showcasing Scandanavian products in the restaurant and the orange handles of the dressmaking shears caught my eye. Thanks for a really great giveaway :-)
ReplyDeleteMy mum has a pair of these and I so have scissor envy.
ReplyDeleteI first came across Fiskars aged about 8 when I was screamed at by my gran for using her fabric scissors to cut paper for my school project. Never made that mistake again.
Life of an Agnostic Sunday School Teacher
I've never had the privilege of using a pair of Fiskars scissors. I started sewing a few months ago, and am ashamed to admit I just bought a store branded set of scissors. From all the rave reviews I've heard about Fiskars since entering the sewing world, I would now love to own a pair of their scissors!
ReplyDeleteWe used them for dressmaking at school, too many years ago to mention, happy days in the 1980's xxx
ReplyDeleteMy Mum used to make some of my clothes and I remember her using them and being in her little sewing box. I love the story how she made me a coat for my 5th birthday and was up all night finishing so I could wear it the next day on my birthday for a school visit to the fire station.
ReplyDeleteAt the moment I only have cheap supermarket scissors, not dressmaking scissors at all. I have the Fiskars paper craft scissors but as everyone knows, you cant cut fabric with scissors which have cut peper!
ReplyDeleteFirst encountered Fiskars about 22 years ago, when I was given my first Roll cutter, and cutting mat. Scissors were then a revelation. So much so, that when a dear friend got her sewing machine I bought her a pair of Fiskars scissors to go with it. Well, she paid the traditional penny!
